Understanding Hallmarking

At Purple Phoenix Jewellery, I am committed to transparency and quality. All my pieces comply with UK hallmarking regulations.

What is a Hallmark?

A hallmark is an official mark stamped on precious metal items to certify their purity and authenticity. In the UK, hallmarking is governed by the Hallmarking Act 1973 and is administered by the four UK Assay Offices.

My Hallmark

All Purple Phoenix Jewellery pieces are hallmarked at the London Assay Office with my registered sponsor's mark:

My sponsor's mark "PPJ" represents Purple Phoenix Jewellery and appears alongside the other hallmark symbols on qualifying pieces.

UK Hallmarking Requirements

Under UK law, items made from precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, and palladium) must be hallmarked if they meet certain weight thresholds:

  • Silver: Items over 7.78 grams must be hallmarked
  • Gold: Items over 1 gram must be hallmarked
  • Platinum: Items over 0.5 grams must be hallmarked
  • Palladium: Items over 1 gram must be hallmarked

What Does a Hallmark Include?

A complete UK hallmark typically consists of:

  • Sponsor's mark: The maker's or sponsor's registered mark (PPJ for Purple Phoenix Jewellery)
  • Fineness mark: Indicates the purity of the metal (e.g., 925 for sterling silver, 375/585/750 for 9ct/14ct/18ct gold)
  • Assay Office mark: Shows which Assay Office tested and marked the item
  • Date letter: Optional mark showing the year of hallmarking

Our Commitment

All Purple Phoenix Jewellery pieces that require hallmarking are sent to an official UK Assay Office for testing and marking. We use only genuine sterling silver (925) and 9 carat gold (375) in our handcrafted pieces.

For pieces below the legal weight threshold, we guarantee the metal purity and can provide certification upon request.
